Standardization rationales

Clarifying our understanding of the way nurses know or think is important. The concept of standardization is pervasive in most discussions about computer data and network exchange for purposes of abstraction, aggregation and summarization. There are many rationales for IT standardization

 

  1. Compare nursing data across clinical populations, settings, geographic areas and time.
  2. Access comparable, minimum nursing care and resources data on local, regional, and national levels.
  3. Enhance documentation of nursing care provided.
  4. Identify trends related to client problems and nursing care provided.
  5. Improve data for quality assurance evaluations. [Top]
  6. Provide an impetus for the development and refinement of NIS.
  7. Compare research on nursing care, including research on nursing diagnosis, nursing interventions, resolution status of client problems, and referral for further nursing services.
  8. Contribute toward the advancement of nursing as a research-based discipline. [Top]
  9. Describe nursing care of patients and their families in a variety of settings, both institutional and noninstitutional.
