Nursing standardization issues

Current efforts to standardize Nursing's data (based on what currently exists in nursing documentation) need further investigation and evaluation. One suggestion is to standardize data based on how they can be used in an empirical approach and/or for particular purposes. It is believed this approach would help to cull data serving no identifiable purpose. Examples include QA, functional status improvement, determination of level of care needed, the Nursing Intervention Classification System (NIC) / the Nursing Outcome Classification System, general status monitoring and evaluation of patient & family needs. Major standardization issues relate to nursing

  • The need for consistent documentation of nursing data;
  • Nursing's role in developing & using computerized data & the IS;
  • The cost of data collection and use of the NMDS; and
  • Acceptance of the standards by the profession. [Top]
