New roles for nurses

Nursing has always contained intersecting disciplines that support the areas of practice. Changes within and outside the discipline alter the nature of these intersections. Within the discipline the role of the nurse has changed because of nursing science and the increasing demands for nursing research. Outside forces for change include technology, finance, economics, management science, health care delivery systems, and public policy. The combination of these changes has increased the type of IS competencies needed by new graduates. A contemporary list might include the following: [Top]
IS competencies are needed by new nursing graduates
  1. Identify, collect and record data relevant to nursing care of patients.
  2. Analyze and interpret patient and nursing information as part of planning for and provision of nursing services.
  3. Employ health care informatics applications designed for clinical practice.
  4. Implement public and institutional policies related to privacy, confidentiality, and security of information.
  5. Analyze a current NIS and identify strengths and areas of needed enhancements. [Top]
