Nursing
informatics is advancing as a scientific discipline with significant implications
for patient care. The discipline's task is to study the processes of nursing
information and build systems to support and automate those processes. Nursing
information refers to both the information of the professional and the information
applicable to the patient. Existing NIS have made communication and documentation
easier and faster. Nurses use a computerized Hospital Information System
more than any other group of health care professionals. Outcome data, however,
are rarely collected, making it impossible to determine care effectiveness.
Because of the specialty's "relative newness" many health care providers
may be unfamiliar with its focus. This booklet provides a brief exposure
to several areas in the field. [Top] |
