Related Links Rating Scale: Believability Your initial reaction to an item is often a good beginning to evaluating items. Don't forget, however, that believability is a function not only of the authors' ability to create believable documents, but also of the reader. Authority Is the source of the information a reliable authority? What evidence do you have of this? Are the names of the authors listed? Are they authorities, or just journalists? You can check the names in the appropriate bibliographic data bases to see if the name is there and, if it is, you can see what types of articles they have written to help with this judgment Evidence What evidence does the piece contain that you can check to verify the facts? Are other sources listed? If so, can you verify the information? Some pieces are listed as "the New England Journal of Medicine says " but no author or date or other information so that you can follow up. Is there a list of references? Support What support exists for the writer's claims? Are you aware of contradictory information? Logic Is the information logically sound? Boe, Graubart, & Cappo (1995) report that this is often the most difficult of all evaluation tasks. Be wary of the one or two case citation that implies that it represents the whole. Timeliness A difficulty with sources on the Internet is the lack of permanency of sources. Unlike print sources, which are archived, Internet resources come and go. One should look for a date on Internet sources and use that as part of the evaluation. Lack of a date should be a red flag.
This site is believable upon first glance and after searching the site. It is a credible source, the American Lung Association. In some of the different areas of the site, the authors didn’t have a lot information directly supporting their claims which left me a little weary of the support of the writers for this page. It was logical and extremely timely, having been updated on February 12 of this year. Rating: B,a,E,s,L,T This site is well organized and believable. It has many different links within the page and is well supported by believable organizations. The source of the information is an accumulation of many different sources with many references and evidence to check the claims. There is a disclaimer which is very comforting to anyone visiting the site who may question reliability. The information is logical and easy for the public to read. The authorities, the Commonwealth Department of Health and Aging state their reason for creating this page for the public to have a source of information about the risks of smoking. This site is at risk for a homogenous nature because it is a site from Australia and so the participants would be limited to citizens from that area only. The site was last updated on November 19, 2002 Rating: B,a,E,S,L,T This website appears to be very professional when you first visit it, making it believable and convincing upon first glance. The authority of the author and creators of the page is not perfectly clear. They give brief autobiographies of themselves, but there isn’t much to back up who they are; no big companies or organizations that are widely known to the public. There were a couple new articles added in January of this year, however this does not mean that the entire site was updated. I didn’t come across many other links within the articles of the website, however the newly added articles included a few links from credible national organizations. Rating: B,a,e.s,L,t This site is well organized and extremely supported by many other sources. The author is a thoracic surgeon. He has made many links for the visitors to go to and asks for nurses input. He also has created an easy access reference page for school researchers to use because many students were visiting his page for research projects. He gives his email address and makes himself available for questions. The site was last updated in February of this year. Rating: B,A,E,S,L,T This site is packed full of information about how to quit smoking. It is somewhat believable upon first glance but may leave the visitor a little weary because there isn’t an accredited organization linked with this website. The authority of the writer of this page, Christine H. Rowley is not extremely high. She is a long time journalist and not a medical doctor. The evidence for the writings is other evidence from other writers so that is not concrete. The support is ample from other writers and ex-smokers who have visited and benefited from this page. The information is very logical and easy to use. The website is handled in a timely manner and the disclaimer, which is helpful to visitors for validating the websited was copyrighted for 2003. Rating: b,a,-,s,L,T This site offers medical advice/explanation on lung conditions for the lay population. The site covers diseases or other topics experienced by all ages. The information provided by this site are research articles, advice from healthcare professionals, therefore believability, authority, evidence, logic and support would all be trustworthy. Rating: B, A, E, S, L This site offers parenting advise, child development and family references on topics like homework, school readiness, and dating and safety issues. Since this web site is written by parents for parents and a .com site, the believability, evidence and authority would have to be questionable, but would offer good support and ligic on the topics of family centered care and issues. Rating: b, a, e, S, L This site was created and made available to the public by a cancer research center, non-profit organization offering information about research reports, educational, and medical care of all forms of cancer. The research center and their team of scientists, medical doctors, and health care professionals create the site; however, someone not affiliated with the healthcare field would probably be apprehensive about putting a lot of time into the content of the site, because it would be too advanced for understanding. Rating: b, A, E, S, L This site is directed specifically to the teenage female with questions regarding their development into a woman. It is created by a department of Women's Health and offers information on topics such as puberty, drug use, and health problems most frequently seen in the female population. This site is believable to the intended audience, backed by authority, evidence and support as well as logically sound. Rating: B, A, E, S, L This site is dedicated to drug policy reform, offering public opinion and facts about drug use and health risks associated with them. The site directory is listed with volunteers and only one M.D. This site is directed toward the knowledge level of the lay public, therefore believability and logic to this audience, but the support, authority, and evidence would be questionable.
