Recommendations
For Further Research

Further studies need to be conducted involving cultural
subgroups. For example, instead of
studying the Asian culture in general, Japanese cultures could be studied.
There needs to be further clarification of what groups have
different cultural practices from that of western cultures. For example, would we consider a native
citizen of the United States with Vietnamese background to believe in western
ideas of medicine or those of their original culture?
More studies need to be conducted on the Asian American
population. The availability on
information on barriers to care encountered by Asian Americans, one of the
fastest growing populations, is very limited.
Agencies and hospitals need to develop cultural competency
training programs that incorporate all cultures aimed at increasing awareness
and sensitivity.
Studies being conducted on minorities and health care now
focus on the health problems that face each group. Studies need to focus on the fact that minorities avoid health
care because they view the system as culturally unsafe. Screening
and education should be geared toward these minorities s0 they are not viewed
as such high-risk patients.
