Western
Healthcare
Western healthcare beliefs involve standardized definitions
of health and illness and the extensive use of technology. Health practices include maintenance of
health and the prevention of disease via such mechanisms as the avoidance of
risk factors and the use of immunizations. Practices also incorporate annual physical examinations and
diagnostic procedures. Healthcare providers in the western culture have the
habit of charting everything, constant use of jargon, and the use of a
systematic approach and problem solving methodology. Western healthcare
providers value the values of compliance, promptness, neatness, and
organization. They employ the customs of a hierarchy, obsessive
handwashing, and the adherence to certain procedures when attending birth or
death. Western healthcare providers
need to realize that not everyone shares their beliefs and change their patient
care accordingly.
