DOGS CONNECTIONS: NON-SPORTING BREEDS
Some of the better known dogs in this rather arbitrary category include poodles, dalmatians, chow chows, Boston terriers.

Poodles especially have inspired a lot of great doggie art - see Dogs in the Arts for some of this.

Recommeded reading from the library:

Steinbeck with Charlie

Travels with Charley; in search of America. by John Steinbeck, John. New York, Viking Press [1962]

Find this at your local library or try: abebooks

Bell & Clayton, Philadelphia: White Poodle. Sixth-plate daguerreotype, circa 1853. Ex-Collection: Sidney Strober. Published in Secrets of the Dark Chamber: The Art of the American Daguerreotype (Smithsonian Institution Press, 1995).

And I couldn't resist this one.

What does "non-sporting" mean? This is an artificial category created by the American Kennel Club for breeds of dogs that could not easily be categorized or placed in one of the other AKC "groups." In other countries, many of the breeds listed here have a more relevant classification. Dogs in the non-sporting group are generally kept as pets Some may have jobs - such as therapy dogs, etc. Some poodles (a breed originally developed to retrieve) do hunt, and many excel in obedience competitions.
