Rat Terriers & Jack Russells
Since I am now owned by three of these tough little persons (Francie, Foxy and Pixie) I had better add a few good links.

Francie came to me as a rescue, given up because she was not good with children. Francie now has a loving home with lots of attention. She also has a mom who won't let Francie be top dog. She is a very naughty, very active dog nevertheless

If you are interested in sharing your home with a rat or Jack Russell terrier, be aware that they frequently end up in rescue due to being too active.

They need someone who will play with them and keep them busy. And this someone needs to be mature. Francie bites. She bit the child five times before her former family decided they had to place her. She attempted to bite me, but found out it wasn't such a good idea. Still, I can't give her a pill or take really good (as in stolen chicken) food from her.

She sometimes won't come in the house unless it suits her, so I have to let her drag a line around if I want to catch her in a hurry. Still she is a dear precious animal who has brightened up my life considerably.

Since my last update, Francie decided to declare war on my elderly German Shorthaired Pointer. So Francie had to move down to the kennel room. She does get on fine with Foxie (a terrier mix about her size and Pixie, my new foster JRT, who is much sweeter than Francie, but even more active).

I also share my home with Henry - who finally convinced me that he was going to stay with me forever. Henry is a mix of bull terrier or pit bull and border collie. To say that he is interesting would be an understatement. He has mellowed out quite a bit. He lives for his ball.

Henry

Recommeded reading from the library:

Bandit : Dossier of a Dangerous Dog by Vicki Hearne. New York, NY : HarperCollins, c1991.

This wonderful book tells the story of Bandit, a pitt bull saved by the author. It is also an essay on racism, which extends not just to other humans, but also to the creatures we live with.
