If you want to link to this page
I do occasionally add links submitted by visitors. There are a very few commercial sites linked to this section of Dogs Connections, however. The web developer selects these links.

Dog Art on the Web

Adventures of Wonder Zoi - An on going Web Serial. Borzoi related.

Probably everybody is familiar with these famous Dogs Playing Poker. They are now featured in a Computer Game - a commercial product, about $10.00. Sounds like lots of fun. For a history of these dogs and the artist, Cassius Marcellus Coolidge see American Heritage, Feb-March 2003 v54 i1 p8(2).

Gordon's Poodle Visuals
"Here's an informal (and--for sure--incomplete!) list of great (and not so great) works of art depicting Poodles and their relatives." - a very comprehensive bibliography of poodles in art. This page is a section of the: Poodle History Project - a stunning compendium of poodle images, lore, & much more.

Jacquie Lawson.com - interactive e-cards featuring the adventures of Chudleigh, a labrador retriever x springer spaniel. Some can be previewed for free - sending postcards requires membership - excellent artwork.

Historical Dogs in Art

Dogs in Art - archived page.  This came from janumoon's beautifully designed encyclopedic doggie site.  I archived it on our server because it was so well done and I was afraid it might disappear (and it did).

Dogs in Religion and Folklore - another page from janumoon's site.

Museums

AKC Museum of the Dog - official information about the museum on the AKC site, and here is another webpage for the museum - neither have much in the way of images.

The Bird Dog Museum - a real place in Grand Junction Tennessee, which celebrates sporting dogs.

Border Collie Museum - this museum is web based.
Contemporary Painting and Photography

Painting Paws™ - Friends for Life Art Gallery - the animals create lovely paintings which are sold to fund the shelter. Some of the paintings are astonishingly beautiful. Friends for Life Home Page

The Little Dog Joschi Introduces Himself - Joschi, a small mixed breed dog tells his story and shares some of his human's wonderful doggie art work. If I were giving out awards, this is one of the most delightful websites I have ever visited.  WONDERFUL! Joschi - fragment of a computer painting.

& don't miss Blue Dog Can Count (she barks the results)
& here is one more Blue Dog Man - some creative web design on these pages

Ron Burns ARTWORK, some of the proceeds of his work support the Ron Burns Little Orphan Animals Fund.  The paintings are delightful. Abby

Spanky - K9 Artist who paints for charity (really) This is an archived version of the story. It is really too good to lose.

Stephen Huneck's Web Page
Author of My Dog's Brain, his web pages feature his woodcuts, sculpture.
Especially see his page on "The Dog Chapel" This site is of special interest to lab lovers, but I find his art work truly inspired.

Studdying with Bonzo - a site dedicated toto the creativity of George Studdy. Post card characture featured in hundreds of images on this website.

Wiener Dog Art - if you only have time for one web site today, go to this one.  Gary Larsen reinterprets the great masters. Illuminated medieval manuscripts

Dogs, Their Habits
The Nature of Dogs

Pages from The Aberdeen Bestiary Project, a manuscript written and illuminated around 1,200 in England, has been digitized and documented by Aberdeen University Library. Just in case you aren't familar with medieval manuscripts--a bestiary is an illustrated book of animals. I find it truely awsome that the whole world can now see a book which was made entirely by hand (there is only one of these) before the invention of the printing press. Now in a new edition. Must see, and read, site.

digitized by the Bibliotheque Nationale de France. Copyright prevents

Dogs in Literature

Of course there are thousands of books about, from the point of view of etc. dogs.  Find them at your local library, bookstore or online.  Here is a big list of online bookstores on the Virtual Reference Desk which I maintain for my own library.

Dogs in Literature - another page from janumoon's site.

Caryn's Recommended doggie books - commercial site, standard titles.

Read and recommended

Lives of the Monster Dogs by Kirsten Bakis. The link is to a review of this very intriguing book.

Follinglo Dog Book - True tale of a Norwegian family in Iowa, told through the various reigns of their dogs. It is and is not about dogs, a fascinating look into of life in the 2nd half of the 19th century.

Horse Heaven by Jane Smiley. - yes, it's a novel about horse racing, but one of the main characters is a Jack Russell terrier named Eilene.

The Romance of Rex - humorous poem; some may not agree (1935).

Performance Art

A Sure Sign that Art is Going to the Dogs - Russian artist Oleg Kulik hears that his performance was for the dogs, he's flattered. That's because his two-week performance that ended recently in New York was AS a dog. includes quicktime video.

Bad Radio Dog Massacre - I make this link with tears my eyes and a heavy heart - look at this website. J. ""Surplus Life" and its Organized Elimination, or "What sort of society are we living in?" This ongoing website project, originating with a focus on N.Y.C.'s "Center for Animal Care and Control", aims to stimulate a consideration of what it means that there exist KILLING FACTORIES FOR DISCARDED PETS."

Mixing Dogs and Art Isn't Kosher - essay on why dogs should not participate in performance art

The Dog as Metaphore
Metaphor: a figure of speech in which a word or phrase literally denoting one kind of object or idea is used in place of another to suggest a likeness between them.

AtomicAgeDog - this site actually does have some doggie content, but it is really a web/photoshop art site.

The Dog Museum - No, not the real dog museum, This site is a computer art project and very techie. It will appeal to some adults with a sense of (I just can't think of the right word here). Some people and most children may think it is boring. Warning: some adult content!. Requires plug-in and sound card. Yes, there is one dog, but the images come up randomly so you may or may not see it.

Dogs in Space - dance company. Probably only the homepage will interest you, but it is another case of canine as metaphore.

Exploding Dogs - has nothing to do with dogs, however, this is an interesting interactive web art site. Sam draws pictures from your titles.

Poodle Page  - This page is not about poodles. Poodles are used metaphorically and as images. Warning, you might not like this page, it has taken me a while to decide to include it here, but it does say something about dogs and language.

Go to google and type in poodle politics as your keywords. I especially enjoyed this one.

Who Let the Dogs Out - politically incorrect and guaranteed to be offensive to some. A good advertisement for using an orthodontists though.

Dogs in Television, Dance, Theater

Dinky Dog - the original 1914   movie cartoon dog. You can see the entire movie here.

Dog Man "A Sure Sign that the Art World is Going to the Dogs" - - CNN article about a very unique gallery performance - includes short movie (don't miss this amazing article)

Wallace and Gromit (by Nick Parks, the creator of "Chicken Run"). If you get a chance to see this entertaining claymation pair, don't pass it up. There are many web pages too. Here are a few of the better links:

gromit

Wishbone
One of my favorite televison programs. I used to say I rarely get to see it, but they changed the show times. Now I watch it in the morning while I am feeding the Multitudes (my 18 dogs). I have seen every episode about three times. However, I would like to mention that Wishbone is not a typical Jack Russell Terrier - he is highly trained and has someone working with him constantly. Visit Bad Dog Talk from the official JRT website for more information.

Wishbone official pages from Big Feats! Entertainment, producers of Wishbone. Interactive, games, images, etc.

Wishbone PBS pages, schedule, plot summaries.

Commercial Sites

Chainsaw Dog - sculpture, pretty unique.

The Dog Store Art Gallery - from dog.com, very nice selection of fine art prints arranged by breed. The folks who maintain this site are strong supporters of rescue.

Dog Engravings from PostaPrint - beautiful antique prints, commercial site.  Do a search on the word dogs to view the images.  Some are really wonderful. Includes the Dog Encyclopedia by Hutchinson.

Unique Dog Arts - dog arts and crafts - items for sale, nice quality, but not especially cheap.

William Secord Gallery - A New York art gallery devoted to dog artwork. Classy website; the art work is famous, for sale, and expensive. "Browsing" is free. They have many images on this website.

Source Menagerie - if you are "over the top" about dogs - this is the place for you to purchase some really fine quality breed related items. I got a great chocolate lab pillow for my brother and sister-in-law. Shipping available.
