My own experience with taming feral cats:

I am happy to tell you that since the last update of this page I have succeeded in taming (more or less) & bringing two feral kitties into my very large household of dogs (26), cats (5), rabbits (1) chicken (11).  Mary and Rathel are now indoor kitties, living the good life.  Mary (mom) has now progressed from a "don't even think of touching me" kitty, to a kitty that sits on my bed bothering me as I try to squeeze in a moment of reading.  Rathel is nearly a lap kitty.

Taming wild kittys takes patience, but it can happen.  I sat next to their feed bowl in the woods beside my fenced yard for hours and hours, sometimes until 2:00 at night over a period of weeks.  It was a happy day when little Rathel let me touch him.  I thought it was an accident at first, that he didn't realize it was a hand touching him.  But then he came back for a little more.  Saddly, I was only able to catch him after he had been mauled by two of my dogs.  He was stunned but basically not injured.  I put him in a large rabbit cage in a secure place outside.  Mom stayed nearby and eventually was so tempted to be with him that she let me grab her by the back of the neck.  I was determined to catch her before there were even more kittens to worry about.  I took them for shots and kept them in the cage outside for about a month.

After Mary's spay, they moved to a large cage inside the house.  It was up high on a bed in a place no dog could go.  Gradually I moved the cage to the floor.  At first the cats had no interest in leaving the cage.  My other cats visited and then begin to take turns sort of baby sitting beside Mary and Rathel.  One day I opened the cage and let them out.  I think the whole process from first seeing starving Mary to freedom in my house took at least six months.  Anyway, a very happy story for these cats.
